With the replacement of Dell Demps to David Griffin as the Executive Vice President, the New Orleans Pelicans have been given life. Griffin turned a disgruntled star and bad contracts, i.e. Anthony Davis & Solomon Hill’s $48 million, into multiple assets for the team both presently and in years to come. This offseason, the Pels acquired: Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, Josh Hart, Zion Williamson, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, multiple picks in future drafts, new talent through summer league, and a city that loves basketball. Big things were expected of Griffin when chosen for the Pelicans’ VP position as he was once the VP of a Cavaliers team with Lebron James. In that role, he contributed in providing the supporting cast to the ‘King’ and winning a championship. Last year, the Pelicans were regarded as a joke by the league and media, but only time will tell if there is real improvement in store for the franchise.

Quick summary, the team under Dell Demps was terrible due to a win-now mentality while letting the player development aspect collect dust. Anthony Davis is a generational talent who wasted multiple years in NOLA because the front office refused to give the man some help. Again under Dell, Omer Asik, Alexis Anjica, and Solomon Hill all had preposterous contracts while being mediocre players. From the beginning, AD has honestly only had two seasons with a solid team (2014 & 2018). When he was given players who we’d consider playing with on 2k, the Damien Lillard and CJ McCollum led Trailblazers ended up being swept in Round 1 of the playoffs.

Lonzo Ball recently revealed learning that he and other fellow Lakers were traded to New Orleans via Twitter. He continued by stating there is no other way to take the news besides ‘personal’. If that mentality means the Pels are gonna finish as a playoff team, or even one of the most improved teams, in year 1 of the franchise rebuild, the entire team needs to develop this sort of demeanor. A new season is in the making and it will be a very interesting one to say the least. The 2019 draft had the most potential NBA superstars that we’ve seen in a long time in one draft so the anticipation is high amongst enthusiasts. The NFL season starts Thursday with the Packers and Bears, but stay tuned in for October.
