CURL COMPARE™ : Maui Moisture VS. Herbal Essences

Since this is the very first post of the series, it’s only right that we start by comparing two types of hair products that are in everyone’s hair routine. So without further ado, let’s start with the basics: shampoo and conditioner. Personally, I’ve been using the Herbal Essences Argan Oil of Morocco Shampoo and Conditioner for about 2 months now and I have no complaints so far. The cool, sleek bottle design and argan oil infusion propelled me to purchase both products initially. The Herbal Essences Argan Oil of Morocco shampoo and conditioner are paraben-free, which means that the active ingredients aren’t as harsh on your hair like other shampoos and conditioners can be. The conditioner is thick and moisturizing, and it leaves my hair super soft after rinsing. Another plus is that both products smell great! The scent is flowery and perfumed, but not overpowering at all. This shampoo and conditioner duo is probably in the top 5 I’ve ever used. I would definitely recommend this product for anyone with any type of naturally curly hair. Grab it at your local drugstore or if you’re lazy like me, at Amazon.
Even though the Herbal Essences Argan Oil of Morocco shampoo and conditioner worked perfectly fine on my natural curls, I still wanted to try something new—just in case there was possibly anything better for my hair somewhere out there. I decided to sift through some unused full-sized samples (whoo-hoo free samples!) left from the Essence festival and I discovered a few goodies. I figured, “What could go wrong?”, especially since I can always go back to my good ole’ faithful Herbal Essences, right?
I decided to try the Maui Moisture Heal & Hydrate + Shea Butter Shampoo and Conditioner first. I had never heard of the Maui Moisture brand at all prior to trying the sample, so I had no expectations at all. At first glance, the bottle is very cool and unique, although the size is noticeably smaller than its Argan Oil of Morocco competitor (the samples were full-sized products). The products’ scent are a great benefit, both the shampoo and conditioner smell heavenly. The scent is warm and fruity but light. I noticed that the shampoo lathered up fairly easily with a small amount of product (which saves money in the long run, cha-ching!). The shampoo did a great job at cleaning my hair, it literally felt squeaky clean after rinsing. Unfortunately, my hair felt indistinctly rough and dry also. That wasn’t a complete deal-breaker for me though so no worries; I decided to apply double (or maybe it was even triple) the amount of conditioner I would normally use, in order to restore moisture into my hair. It should also be noted that the conditioner has great slip, which helps a whole lot when detangling. My generous application of conditioner worked fairly fine, but it also left me with barely any conditioner left for later use 😓
